More than 1,000 volunteers from Stater Bros. Markets, Coca-Cola, and the community raked sand, removed 489 pounds of trash and hand-picked debris from 1.5 million square feet of sand along Huntington State Beach on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Also, 20 planters were weeded, removing non-native species and a fence around the Least Tern Colony was repaired, which protects the endangered birds.

 

The day’s activities represents 3,000+ volunteer hours, which calculates to a $25,000 savings in labor costs to Southern California State Parks, significant in a time of severe budget pressures.

 

Volunteers and children also painted 25 rain barrels for the parks, created from repurposed Coca-Cola syrup barrels.
